Message from the President
We are currently registered in the "Detroit's Top
Workplaces 2008" contest. This fall, the Free Press will publish a
special report on the region's best places to work, as judged by the
people who know best -- employees. In October 2008 The Detroit Free
Press is publishing the "Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces" special
report in the Sunday edition of The Detroit Free Press and on freep.com.
In the supplement they will be celebrating the many high quality
workplaces we have in the region. Taking part is free of charge and
every organization will receive valuable feedback on their workplace.
Companies named to the list will also be able to use the Detroit Free
Press Top Workplaces logo on job postings, websites, letterheads, email
footers and PR activities. We will keep you posted on updates as they
become available.Congratulations to all
employees who are participating in our health care program. As we all
know, health care costs are skyrocketing. Fortunately, our latest
increase was only 1/3 of the national average. This was due to a number
of factors; we are self-funded so have better control of costs, and
everyone has become better educated in the best ways to decrease costs.
2 examples come to mind: By using Prompt Care vs. Emergency Room
treatment when appropriate, costs are 1/4 of what they could be. Same
goes for requesting generic drugs vs. non-generic, 1/4 less for generic.
Also, don't forget we give premium deductions to our fitness club
members (besides, it's good for your health!). Good health benefits
everyone!

Company tests new retractable-stud snow tires
Studded tires work best on snowy and icy roads across the
nation's snowbelt, but highway officials wince at the damage they cause
when roads are dry. Promoters of a new type of winter tire believe
they've solved the problem with some James Bond-style gadgetry,
Associated Press reports. Q Tires feature retractable studs
that emerge when the driver flicks a switch inside the car. When the
snow and ice melt, all it takes is another flip of the switch -- and
voila -- the studs hide back under the treads and the tires are
transformed again. The company's founder, Michael O'Brien, grew up in
southern California and probably never gave much thought to winter
tires. But then he married and moved to the Midwest, where he soon grew
weary of the ritual of putting the chains on his car and taking them
off.

Chrysler ads tout personal touch

Chrysler LLC's wants its new ad campaign to show that the
automaker is taking customer's dreams and getting them into Chrysler
cars, and trucks. Executives unveiled the new "If you can dream it, we
can build it" campaign, which debuted April 14,
The Detroit News reports. They
also showed off the marketing plans for the Dodge Journey crossover,
which kicks off this week. The new campaign portrays the now-private
automaker as quicker to respond to customer needs. Chrysler Chief
Marketing Officer Deborah Meyer said the company's already made 400
changes to 2008 and 2009 models based on customer feedback.

Nissan, Chrysler agree to share products
Chrysler LLC and Nissan Motor Co. announced a blockbuster partnership Monday
to assemble cars and pickups for each other in a deal that draws on each
automaker's expertise and perhaps sets up the companies for a much deeper
relationship down the road, the
Detroit Free Press reports. Nissan will build small cars for
Chrysler to sell and Chrysler will make pickups for Nissan under a deal
announced by both companies late Monday afternoon. Analysts saw the moves as
a potential big step toward adding Chrysler to the Renault-Nissan alliance,
but the companies downplayed that scenario. Carlos Ghosn, the chief
executive of both Renault and Nissan, has long said he wants a North
American partner.

Fixed and resold for profit
Vehicles given up for dead in the U.S. increasingly
are finding new lives abroad. "Everybody wants a Ford truck in Mexico
-- Central America, too," Victor Montes de Oca, a buyer for Honduran
importer Travecor Peres scanning vehicles at an auction recently, told The
Charlotte Observer. He shows up every Wednesday morning to
Insurance Auto Auctions in Clayton, where he may buy as many as 10
vehicles to ship to Latin countries. "People there can't afford a new
car, but these they can," he said. As the dollar sags against foreign
currencies, exporters are finding an increasing market overseas for
vehicles that can be fixed and resold at a profit. In Poland, people
chase after Subaru's, Nissans and Toyotas. In Lithuania, Lexus is in
demand. Many Russians and Mexicans like four-wheel drive. |

Chrysler LLC March 2008 Sales
Indicate Newest Models Have Strong Customer Appeal
- Total sales record set for fuel-efficient compact vehicle trio of
Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot
- New long-wheel base minivan models' individual sales continue to grow
Chrysler LLC today reported total March 2008 sales of 166,386 units.
Total March sales reflect a combination of positive consumer response to
new models, a sustained and planned reduction in daily- rental fleet
vehicle sales and an industry-wide slowdown in large pickup truck and
SUV sales. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.
"We are in a period where the public hears news about the economy every
day and it is clearly having an impact on our industry," said Vice
Chairman and President Jim Press. "At the same time, this market
environment is driving more customers to our newest value-oriented,
fuel-efficient products like Jeep Patriot, Dodge Journey, Dodge Avenger
and Chrysler Sebring. Chrysler's strategy to right-size our operations,
increase fuel efficiency and reduce daily rental fleet sales will help
us get through this period as a stronger company with healthier
dealers."
Chrysler had solid customer interest for its combined compact vehicle
lineup of the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot. Combined, the
three vehicles reached 21,909 compact vehicle buyers in March, an
increase of 51 percent from March 2007. All three models had increased
sales in March to set a new monthly sales record for the lineup.
New customer sales increased 18 percent for Chrysler's two new long
wheel base minivans, the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand
Caravan. Total Dodge Grand Caravan March sales were 14,101, an increase
of 8 percent over the same model in 2007. The Chrysler Town & Country
long wheel base model had strong March sales of 13,335 units, a
year-over-year increase of 32 percent.
Chrysler's new mid-sized cars continue to grab marketshare with total
Chrysler Sebring Sedan/Sebring Convertible sales up 23 percent and Dodge
Avenger sales up 8 percent, for a 15 percent segment increase in March
2008. Another new vehicle, the Dodge Journey sold 2,640 units in its
second month of sales. The Company finished the month with 423,607 units
of inventory, or a 66- day supply. Inventory is down by 15 percent
compared with March 2007 when it was at 499,771 units. |
