DaimlerChrysler Financial expands call
center to serve Hispanics
Citing a Selig Center for
Economic Growth report indicating the buying power of Hispanic consumers is
estimated to reach $1.2 trillion three years from now, up from $764 billion in
2005, DaimlerChrysler Financial Services expanded a newly opened call center to
service Spanish-speaking customers in the U.S. and Mexico. The call center, in
Monterrey, Mexico, employs 180 full- and part-time workers who manage calls to
and from Hispanic Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge car buyers. The company expects the
center to field 2 million calls per year. DaimlerChrysler Financial, which
offers Web sites, contracts and financial education materials in Spanish, is the
nation's fifth-largest automotive finance provider.
Hispanic consumers represent the largest and
fastest growing minority group in the United States. By the year 2050, the U.S.
Census Bureau projects that approximately 25 percent of U.S. households will
speak Spanish as their first language, up from only 13 percent just two years
ago.
In-car navigation surging
The age-old family squabbling over driving
directions is in jeopardy. The latest portable global positioning system devices
make seamless everything from finding highway rest stops to circumventing nasty
traffic jams, the
Online Wall Street Journal
reports. The U.S. market for such gadgets continues to expand: Sales of
after-market personal navigation devices experienced triple-digit growth in
2006, with over 2.2 million new units sold, according to the Consumer
Electronics Association. And forecasts suggest sales could surpass 3.3 million
units this year.

Auto dealer puts vintage autos on the
block, reaps a windfall
Dozens of cars from the
expansive private collection of a Michigan car dealer netted substantial sums --
including $1.35 million for a 1931 Duesenberg once owned by Howard Hughes --
during a weekend auction,
The Detroit News writes this week. John McMullen, who co-founded the
Somerset Pontiac GMC dealership in suburban Detroit in 1975, offered 80 cars,
motorcycles and other items at his estate. "After nearly 20 years of collecting,
restoring and competing, I have decided to share the joy of collecting that I
have with others and make the collection more manageable by keeping a few
favorites," McMullen said in a statement posted on the Web site for RM Auctions,
which conducted the event Saturday. The estimated value of the collection was
between $7.5 million and $10 million, according to the company.
