Better car quality squeezes mechanics
What is good news for customers and automakers has a downside, felt mostly by those who make their living in the garage. Rick Carr, the service manager at Buff Whelan Chevrolet in Sterling Heights, remembers the old days when cars broke down as fast as mechanics could fix them, The Detroit News writes this week. In the past two decades, though, Detroit's automakers and their foreign competitors have dramatically improved quality and reduced defects. The upshot: The most trouble-plagued cars today are still far more reliable than the best cars of 20 years ago, and that's taking a toll on the service end of the auto business.  Service and parts sales fell from $85 billion in 2005 to $80.5 billion in 2006, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. And sales of parts and accessories for autos still under warranty dropped slightly in the first quarter of this year to 17.4 percent of total sales from 17.8 percent in 2006.

WSJ: Chrysler warns it may shut down weak dealers
Chrysler Group is warning some of its dealers that it may try to shut them down if they don't improve their sales within six months, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site yesterday. Chrysler, which is being spun off by German parent DaimlerChrysler in a $7.4 billion deal with Cerberus Capital Management, has about 3,700 dealers, compared with General Motors' 6,900 and Ford Motor's 4,200. The paper reported that 40 to 50 dealers in the U.S. Great Lakes region who had been missing monthly sales goals received letters from Chrysler earlier this month.
The letters warned them that they must improve their performance within 180 days or Chrysler would begin the process to end their franchises, the paper said, citing two dealers who received the letters.
Similar letters are expected to go out to other dealers across the country in the next few weeks, the paper said, citing an unnamed source. A company spokesman could not be reached immediately for comment. As previously reported, the automaker earlier banned 463 dealerships from its factory auctions for failing to sell enough new vehicles.
Each month Chrysler estimates the number of new units a dealership should sell, and if it fails to meet at least 50 percent of this "minimum sales responsibility" it's banned from the auctions until it sells enough new vehicles. The company has complained many of its dealers who consistently fail to meet these targets are, as Steven Landry, Chrysler executive vice president of NAFTA sales, recently remarked to Automotive News, "basically in the used-car business."

Chrysler Group adds SIRIUS to more than 70% of vehicles
SIRIUS Satellite Radio today announced that Chrysler Group expects to install SIRIUS Satellite Radio, a popular accessory on some vehicle lines, in more than 70 percent of its vehicle production for the 2008 model year, up from about 40 percent for the previous model year.
For 2008, SIRIUS will be included as a standard feature in premium and mid-level price classes on most Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models. Additionally, SIRIUS will be a 100 percent standard feature on Chrysler Sebring and Aspen, the all-new Dodge Challenger and Nitro, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander. Chrysler Group includes one year of SIRIUS service with each new vehicle. SIRIUS Satellite Radio is pre-activated, so customers can begin listening to SIRIUS immediately upon taking delivery of their new vehicles.
"SIRIUS Satellite Radio is an entertainment feature our customers clearly enjoy and are demanding more and more," said Christine MacKenzie, Executive Director -- Multi-brand Marketing and Agency Relations, Chrysler Group. "We are pleased to enhance our customers' driving and ownership experience by offering SIRIUS entertainment and technology throughout the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicle portfolio."
SIRIUS delivers more than 130 channels of the best programming in all of radio. SIRIUS is the original and only home of 100 percent commercial free music channels in satellite radio, offering 69 music channels.
