2017 Dodge Journey vs Ford Edge: Performance
The base engine for the Edge is a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four that comes in front- or all-wheel drive. There’s also a 3.5L V-6, and a 2.7L twin-turbocharged V-6. All engine variants are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Journey is equipped with a 2.4L four-cylinder or a 3.6L V-6, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The four-cylinder is front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available for the V-6.
The Edge is more SUV than car, and it rides like one. There’s a harsh ride quality, leans through turns, and clunky steering that are reminiscent of early SUVs. The Journey, on the other hand, rides like a luxury sedan, with more control and smoothness than would be expected of a vehicle of its size and height.
2017 Dodge Journey vs Ford Edge: Comfort and Space
The Edge finds itself somewhere between Ford’s other crossover offerings. It’s not quite as compact as the Escape, but it doesn’t offer the third row of the Explorer. As such, it’s designed to accommodate four adults, rather than several children and luggage. There’s very little space in the backseat, and all the seats are hard, flat, and unsupported. There’s a decent-sized cargo bay, but it requires a great deal of moving and shifting of the seats to create space for cargo. When it comes to cargo and passengers, there may need to be space sacrificed to fit everyone.
The Journey offers an accommodating cabin, with well-supported, contoured seats, plush materials, and three rows of seating. There’s plenty of head- and legroom throughout, and the seating can slide fore and aft to create more cabin or cargo space. Adults and children can sit comfortably in the Journey for long car rides, and the interior is designed for durability and easy cleaning. There are also many storage cubbies and bins throughout the cabin for stowing small items.

Though it offers plenty of capability and utility, in the 2017 Dodge Journey vs. Ford Edge comparison, the Ford Edge doesn’t have the same passenger or cargo space, interior comfort, or handling of the Dodge Journey. For people with large families, or those who regularly cart several passengers, the Journey is much more accommodating.
